To reduce our impact on the world’s resources today and for future generations by being socially and environmentally responsible in our actions, our practices and our decision-making.
Why Conserve Our Resources?
Conserving the Earth’s resources has become one of the most important global issues. Staggering statistics and research continues to demonstrate the importance of making changes now in our business practices to help protect our global resources and climate. Some of the more significant environmental issues in the world today are:
An alarming rate of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
A gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature over the last 140 years compared
to that of the last 1,000-year average.
Compared to any other country in the world, the U.S. produces more landfill garbage
per day per person. Source: Municipal Solid Waste in the United States, 2005, BioCycle 2006
According to the World Resources Institute,® by 2025 half of the world may live
 in water-stressed areas.
JBSS is taking steps to become an environmental leader. It is our hope that our environmental vision, focus and actions will serve as an example for our customers, vendors and consumers.
And as an industry leader, JBSS is proud to do our part when it comes to environmental conservation. From reducing the energy we use to recycling programs to sustainable packaging, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment today and for generations to come.

Here are just a few examples of the initial steps we have taken to reduce our impact on the environment:
Energy and Natural Resource Reduction
An energy assessment has been conducted at each facility, and an action plan for each has been completed. Short-term and long-term goals have been established to reduce utility usage including electricity, gas, nitrogen and water. Scorecards have been developed to track and document our progress.
Plant Level
Replacing plant high-intensity discharge lighting with fluorescent lighting. This ongoing project for
all plants will reduce lighting operational costs by 50% and improve lighting quality.
Replaced Selma, Texas, plant roof utilizing local rebates found through our sustainable efforts,
which reduced the cost of the replacement by 50% and increased the thermal barrier
significantly. In addition, leaving the existing roof in place alleviated landfill usage by many tons.
Designed a preventative maintenance program for roaster burner tuning, which was implemented
for all plants to identify and adjust inefficient gas burners saving between 5-10% on annual
 natural gas spending.
Administration Level
Corporate heating and air-conditioning set points established at 68 degrees for heat and
 74 degrees for air-conditioning.
Posters placed throughout office areas to raise awareness to recycle.
Eliminated Styrofoam® coffee cups from offices.
Tags placed on all conference room light switches to turn off lights when done with meetings.
Transitioned from plastic to recycled paper bags at outlet stores.
Frequent reminders appear in internal communications to employees to turn off office lights
 when attending meetings.
Two-sided printing and copying is now the norm.
Materials
We are converting select packaging structures to utilize a portion of renewable or sustainable materials.
Food Service Baking and Snack Essentials packaging is moving to approximately
 35% plant-based film structure.
Consumer-based Fisher Chef’s Naturals Baking packaging is moving to approximately
 35% plant-based film structures.
All corrugated boxes are purchased through Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) certified vendors.
Composite cans are made from 50% recycled paperboard material.
These are just a few of the first steps that we have taken to help reduce our impact on the Earth’s resources.
